MORE volunteers are needed to lend a hand at a popular Christchurch museum.

The Red House Museum in Christchurch is appealing for willing volunteers to help out in the museum and shop during the week and on Saturdays.

Ideally the museum in Quay Road needs around six or seven new helpers, with time slots on Saturdays and Thursdays available, although the museum can work around what people are able to commit to.

Stephen Lowy, South West area community curator said the role would include a lot of variety with tasks including front of house, meeting and greeting visitors, selling in the shop and serving in the small cafe on site.

“Obviously the role will also mean keeping an eye on things in the exhibitions and talking to visitors a little bit about them if they have questions,” he added.

“During school holidays we run quite a few activities so it would be lovely – not to mention helpful – just to have a few more helping hands.”

The Red House Museum is a Grade II listed Georgian workhouse, which was converted into a museum in the 1920s by the antiquarian Herbert Druitt.

As well as ever-changing exhibitions, the museum also displays Christchurch treasures, including Saxon, Bronze and Stone Age finds.

Colin Ridley, 74, from Christchurch, who worked at the museum for around 40 years before becoming a volunteer in the past two years, said: “It is the meeting people aspect of the role, which I really enjoy.

“I love the museum. If it wasn’t for this building, then where would the town be?

“It’s lovely showing people what we have on offer.”

The Red House is open five days a week from Tuesdays to Saturdays.
