ACTOR and writer Stephen Fry has been using social media to document a trip around the New Forest.

The QI presenter has been uploading pictures of his journey via Twitter and Instagram.

Mr Fry has more than six million followers on Twitter and 42,000 on the photo-sharing site Instagram. His photo of a white pony grazing was ‘liked’ more than 300 times.

His caption said: “A walk in the New Forest is one of the greatest pleasures England can bestow. The ponies are habituated and shyly tolerant but wholly independent and undomesticated.”

Another photo captured a pony peering round a tree and staring straight into the camera. He wrote: “I was very lucky that this grey was so forbearing.”

But it seems his stroll around the Forest didn’t go to plan. He later tweeted: “Somewhat embarrassingly got lost on yesterday’s evening walk. Ended up seven miles from where I’m staying. All New Forest paths look the same...”

Oh dear
An Ordance Survey map and a basic compass would seem to be the minimum necessary if you are not totally familiar with the area. Even better would be a GPS receiver and for the New Forest I beleive there is a 1:25000 OS map. If funds are not an issue the more expensive GPS's are pre-loaded with maps. You could use a removable Sat Nav!

Fry thinks he's so clever he doesn't need a map. No, he tried to remember the route via the Latin name for each tree he passed and then intended to do so in reverse to get back.
Pity there are no quicksand bogs he could fall into to never be heard from again.
