FIREFIGHTERS were called to a road crash due to fears that gas canisters were leaking at the scene.

Crews from Ferndown and Christchurch attended after a car and a truck collided on one of Dorset’s busiest roads.

They were alerted by ambulance crews who had been called to the northbound carriageway of the A338 Spur Road at 12.50pm today.

One man was taken to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital with cuts and bruises following the collision between a silver Isuzu truck registered to a Coventry company and a silver Vauxhall Corsa registered to a man from Fordingbridge.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue said a smell of gas had been reported so crews attended to ensure the truck’s load was safe and to disconnect the battery of the car involved.

The crews were happy the scene was safe within 15 minutes.

Police closed the road northbound near the Blackwater Junction until around 2.40pm.

The collision caused major tailbacks but congestion remains in the area.
