MOTORISTS are being urged to remove all valuables from their vehicles to avoid becoming victims of car crime.

Dorset Police is running an operation targeting car thieves and is urging drivers to take the necessary steps to avoid them becoming victims of the criminals.

With the summer approaching police in the county are expecting an increase in visitor numbers and more people heading to beauty spots in Dorset.

The force is already using a range of tactics to target car thieves as part of its ongoing Operation Wave.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Powley, of Dorset Police, said: “Unfortunately, people are still taking risks when leaving their vehicles unattended.

“Many vehicles are seen with valuables on display or windows left open.

“This is an open invitation for thieves.

“If a thief sees, or even thinks there is something of value in your car, they will try their luck.

“The best advice is not to leave anything in your car. Leave it at home, or take it with you.”

He added: “Dorset Police remains committed to reducing these crimes, detecting offenders and bringing them to justice and we are asking members of the public to help us.

“I would like to remind visitors to follow these simple steps to help keep their vehicles safe while enjoying our beautiful county.”

1. Motorists are advised that valuable items should not be left in cars.

2. Windows and doors should always be securely locked.

3. Police are also warning people not to leave sat navs in their cars and holders and cables should not be left on display.

4. Motorists are advised to make sure sat nav holder marks are not left visible on the windscreen.

5. If a vehicle has an alarm the advice is to always use it.
