A LIMITED edition print of Hengistbury Head is being raffled off to support the campaign to save the land train.

The framed print was donated by artist Wendy Brown.

She said she wanted to show her support for the train service that has run over Hengistbury Head for 45 years.

Bournemouth council recently gave the operators notice to quit and announced it would be taking the service in-house. However, after more than 21,000 people signed a petition protesting at the decision, the council relented and is currently in negotiations with operator Joyce Faris.

Raffle tickets for the print cost just £1 each and will be on sale from the land train office until the August bank holiday weekend. The draw will take place on Monday, August 25.

Wendy said: “The painting was probably done about three years ago as a private commission for a private collector. However, when I had done it we all liked it so much that I asked if I could do some limited edition prints of it.

“I was on Facebook one day and saw something crop up about the land train being under threat. I heard about the Hands Off Our Train (HOOT) campaign and said they could have this print if they thought it would help raise awareness or funds.

“The land train is probably as old as I am and it has childhood memories and fond affections for so many people. It’s a unique and iconic little thing. When I heard about the dilemma, donating this picture seemed the perfect thing to do.”

Sally Longman, one of the seven founding members of HOOT, said: “We were extraordinarily pleased to receive the print, as it’s such a beautiful piece of art and really pertinent with the land train in it.

“Any money raised will be given to the current operators of the land train and they can decide what they want to do with it.”
