Kate McElhatton, who lives nearby, said: “It's shocking.

“There are lots of elderly people and young families living here. Even in the summer, when all the kids are out of school, all you can hear are the birds singing.”

Liz Bowden, who has lived in Jewell Road for 38 years, slept right through the incident.

However, she said her husband heard it unfold.

“He said there were two loud bangs and then a car shot off,” she said.

“I didn't know anything about it until the police rang my doorbell in the early hours.”

She said she wasn't well acquainted with the people currently living in the property, but added: “I've always found them to be polite and it's not nice at all to hear.”

Ward councillor John Adams, who also chairs Dorset’s police and crime panel, has given us his reaction to the incident.

“It’s absolutely shocked me," he said.

“It’s a real shame because we’ve done such an awful lot of work with the teams we have in there. There’s a new atmosphere there at Townsend and this is something I wasn’t even dreaming about.

“I hope this is a one-off incident and people will be able to relax and feel safe.”

One man at Townsend Community Centre said he had known nothing of the incident until after he had arrived at the centre this morning.

“We don’t usually get that sort of thing around here. We have our ups and downs and you get people having fights but you don’t usually get that sort of thing happening around here. It’s usually a very quiet place," he said.

“You might have this and then you get nothing else for a couple of years. It could be someone from out of town.

“It’s not a bad area, it’s a good area."

One neighbour who didn't wish to be identified said his son heard a couple of bangs and thought they were fireworks in the early hours.

Then he realised they probably weren't fireworks but was too scared to look out of the window as he thought there might be someone with a gun around.

Another resident said: "It is normally a great area, we don't normally get much trouble here."

He said he didn't know what had happened with the family who live in the property.

8:46am

The house has broken windows and damage to the front wall.

Around six houses and part of the road near the junction with Cheshire Drive are cordoned off this morning as investigations continue.

I find it really odd that people saw and have identified what the man looked like but nobody has mentioned the car which is considerably bigger than a man!

My god, so much drama, so much tension lavished on trying to polish a non-story. Tweets about people going in and out of front doors really is dull, dull, dull.

Why all the pictures of nothing? Here's a door...here's some grass....oh, here's some pavement...

And the one who said "One neighbour.....said "It's frightening. You just don't expect it"
I don't think anyone expects to be shot through their kitchen window.

It IS a nice place to live. It wasn't for a while but don't tar the whole place just by one incident!
