GLAMOROUS shots taken from the end of the fashion runway have earned a Bournemouth student first prize in a fashion photography competition.

Maggie Burford had just 50 minutes to find a wifi hot spot and then select, caption and file her five favourite pictures from Vodafone London Fashion Weekend as part of Canon’s ‘Shoot The Show’ contest.

Canon UK’s Frankie Jim said the judges were particularly impressed by the “technical ability and strong composition” of Maggie’s work.

“It’s always refreshing to see someone trying something new and bold,” he added.

Maggie, 35, attended the show with a group of photojournalism students from Up To Speed in Bournemouth and their tutor Neil Turner.

“The NCTJ course really helped me prepare for the show,” said Maggie, who moved to Dorset from Birmingham to take the photojournalism course. “We’d practised photographing moving subjects during our sports photography lessons and had discussed working in a press pit area.”

Maggie beat students from several other photography courses and won £500 in Canon vouchers, a camera bag and a monopod as well as a press pass to next season’s London Fashion Week.

Maggie said: “What was important to me was completing the job in the allotted time, so to find out that I’d won was a lovely surprise. It’s all very surreal.”
