A building site in the centre of Bournemouth, where construction is under way to build a Hilton Hotel, 60 apartments and over 200 parking spaces, has recently been decorated with 20 panels of artwork by local primary school children.

The idea came from THAT group, who decided to involve local primary schools their local project. Children aged 5-10 were asked to create their artwork around the brief of ‘My sustainable Bournemouth’ and ‘My local area’ creating pieces around their favourite places in the sunny seaside town.

The children’s art boards were mounted in March surrounding the construction site. Jesse Banovic, Marketer for THAT Group said they were created by the local pupils with a lot of passion and creativity. "It was a huge success with the schools and we had great feedback from the students and teachers from the schools that got involved.”

THAT group emailed over 30 primary schools before Christmas to get them involved with the local projects and in January the project was launched. Five primary schools- Jewell Academy, Pokesdown Primary, St James Academy, Winton Primary, and LEAF Oak Academy got involved with the scheme.

All the students were welcomed by a tour of the construction site. Each student received a health and safety talk from McAcleer & Rushe then clothed in a hard hat and a high visibility jacket to then browse the site itself from the viewing box.

All students received a little goody bag at the end of the tour, each back containing black pencil and mini hard hat in a cement look-alike mini bag created by Think Tank Media, who also printed the mounted boards surrounding the construction site.

Over all, the scheme was a big success. Banovic also said that "working with the primary schools is a really important way of showing how we can work with all generations of the Bournemouth community.”

Jesse and her team are planning much more work with the Bournemouth community itself. “Areas that I am looking into at the moment for the summer projects hold a strong sustainable focus and how we can best incorporate members of the community in our work," she said.

Lots of plans are bubbling away for future plans for the Bournemouth Community.

The hotel, apartments, and new car park it set to open in the summer 2015.
