MOTHER’S Day was a ‘great time to reflect on our achievements’, said staff at Wool’s Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre.

The park, which takes in abused primates from across the world, has a few home grown mums of its own.

Baby chimpanzee Thelma is being cared for by mum Cherri, and woolly monkey mum Xingu recently gave birth to baby boy Xavi.

Meanwhile, Hsiao-quai, a great orangutan mum is caring for her adopted daughter Awan.

A park spokesman explained: “Mother’s Day at Monkey World is a great time to reflect on the achievements of the ape rescue centre.

“Many of the rescued primates here were stolen from the wild and taken away from their own mothers when they were very young.

“But at Monkey World there has been a great success in creating adoptive families.

“Some are now part of international breeding programmes for endangered species and have gone on to become mothers themselves.”

The spokesman added that every baby born at Monkey World as part of international breeding programs helped to protect endangered primates from extinction.

“So all the babies at Monkey World are very special,” he added.
