SCORES of young superheroes used pedal power to make their journey to school more fun and environmentally-friendly.

After enthusiastically supporting the Big Pedal initiative for the past fortnight, young pupils at Winton Primary School were rewarded with the opportunity to dress up as their favourite superhero for a day.

Youngsters from reception to Year Six swished their capes as they cycled, scooted and walked to school on the final day of the national Big Pedal competition.

Headteacher Neil Tarchetti said: “We have had a massive improvement in the number of pupils using bikes or scooters to come to school – on some days we have had up to 25 per cent of our 660 children taking part.

“Participation was so good the biggest problem was finding extra space to store all the bikes and scooters; the racks are full three times over.

“The children have really enjoyed walking, cycling or scooting into school, especially in the good weather we have had this week.

“And there are real benefits for the school. We find they are a lot more awake and lively and ready to learn.”

Emily Goldsmith Sustrans’ Bike It Plus Officer, said: “We’re delighted that the children at Winton have embraced the Big Pedal and active travel. It’s great to see so many children cycling and scooting and it’s even better to see them pedalling to school in their superhero gear.”
