A CRACK team of students joined a councillor to clear up the litter from the streets of Winton.

Cllr Pat Oakley, donning a green ‘big tidy up’ top, led the all-female contingent down Cardigan Road armed with trigger-style picking devices and rubbish bags.

The clear-up effort came after the Winton East councillor called for increased funding to tackle the litter problem in the area, which has a high student population.

Chloe Schendel-Wilson, student volunteering president at Bournemouth University, said: “Students sometimes forget in the excitement of being at university that we are living among families and an established community. It is important to show the local people that we care and are helping.”

Cllr Oakley said: “The student volunteers have a done a lot of good work in this area.

“The litter does not exclusively belong to the students.”
