CONSTRUCTION is now fully under way on a controversial scheme to build new family housing and a creative hub in Boscombe.

The Gladstone Mews housing scheme will provide 11 new affordable houses for people to buy and a hub that will help small businesses in the creative sector.

The scheme was opposed by many residents who did not want to lose the BCCA building that formerly occupied the site.

But Bournemouth council said it had retained the listed part of the former school building and said the scheme would help improve the area.

Cllr Jane Kelly, cabinet member for partnerships and regeneration, said: “It’s great to see the progress being made to transform the site into much-needed housing for the benefit of the community as well as providing a new creative hub to help small businesses grow and flourish.

“Providing more good quality housing in Boscombe is a high priority for this council and it will help redress the balance of the over-supply of private sector rented homes and encourage more people to own their own home in Boscombe.”

Debbie Clifton, Bournemouth 2026 development manager, said Boscombe residents would have first chance to purchase the new homes.

“We’re looking forward to making the Gladstone Mews properties available for local purchase at affordable prices,” she said.

“The houses and bungalow will be available to people who would not be able to afford to buy a similar home on the open market.”
