BURTON Parish Council is appealing for land to potentially build a new village hall after being homeless for the past few years.

The parish council is calling on landowners to contact them if they have any available land in the village where a new hall could be built.

Parish council chairman, Judy Jamieson, pictured, said: “One of the things our residents have mentioned is that the village of Burton has no village hall.

“Last week the Dorset Association of Parish and Town Councils advertised there was a community asset and services grant worth around half a million pounds for all organisations who would apply for a local asset.

“We don’t have anywhere in which to build a hall which is such a shame because we think the village needs a facility like this.”

The parish council has been holding their meetings at The Oak Inn until last week when they moved to the United Reformed Church.

The chairman added: “The number of times I’ve heard people ask, ‘where is the village hall?’ “We are looking to see if there is any possibility of any land for a hall, before we apply for a grant.”

In 2010, campaigners protested against the loss of the old village hall, on the corner of Salisbury Road and Preston Lane.

The parish council had been forced to stop using the hall 18 months earlier due to its run-down condition.

It has now undergone major improvements and serves as a day nursery.
