SHOCKED residents say the collision that killed an elderly woman in Poole was ‘an accident waiting to happen’.

Police confirmed early yesterday that the woman, who was involved in a collision with a car on Wednesday evening, had died.

Residents expressed their sadness at the news of the death and some said they had watched with anxiety from their windows as emergency services tended to the victim.

The pedestrian, who has still not been named, was involved in a collision with a white Renault Megane in Herbert Avenue at around 7.45pm near Tesco Express and the junction of Stanfield Road.

Paramedics treated her at the scene and police closed the road between Sark Road and Arne Avenue for around three hours while police carried out investigations, including checking the pedestrian crossing.

A police spokesman confirmed at 12.40am yesterday that the woman had died from her injuries.

A number of people in the area said that the Herbert Avenue junction with Stanfield Road was particularly dangerous.

Mick Marshall, 72, who lives nearby, said: “It has been an accident waiting to happen.

“It is a nightmare at that junction and I have had one or two near misses myself.”

Dave Evans, of Wyvern Close, added that the road was particularly dangerous for elderly people crossing the road to use the shops.

Barrie Sansom, 44, who helps at Good Shepherd Church in Stanfield Road, said the road could be precarious for older users.

“It is one of the most dangerous junctions in Parkstone. It is a very nasty corner and always busy,” he added.

Barrie Appleby, a resident at Ralph Jessop Court, said: “There is so much traffic which comes past and it is dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians.”

Cllr Tony Trent, who has represented the Alderney ward for 30 years, said that the crossing near the junction of Stanfield Road had been there since it was fought for 20 years ago following the death of an elderly woman.

“It’s particularly sad that someone has been killed near it,” he added.
