PLANS to revamp a Ferndown skate park need a boost from residents, a town councillor has said.

Scooterists, inline skaters, skateboarders and BMX riders joined forces early last year to create the Skate Park Action Group, which is seeking to raise £100,000 for a new concrete bowl at the King George V Playing Fields.

And now chairman of the group Steve Cartwright and treasurer Councillor Steve Lugg are making fresh calls for financial support.

Cllr Lugg said: “The action group has raised around 11 per cent of the total needed, thanks to provisional support from Ferndown Town Council, and talks are ongoing with East Dorset District Council. “The group is grateful for donations already received from Ferndown residents to date. If you as an individual or business can help us, please get in touch.”

The next event at the park is Turndown at Ferndown, which will be taking place on Easter Sunday, April 19.

Last year, more than 200 attended the day.

The Ferndown Skatefest will also be held at the venue on June 28.

Plans to revamp the bowl were launched last year, as the current facilities were built more than 15 years ago.

Campaigners say a concrete bowl will have a 50-year life-span.

Cllr Lugg said: “These sports are the biggest youth participatory sports across our area, and we urgently need to upgrade our facilities with a concrete bowl. “Our call to everyone in Ferndown is, ‘Can you help us’?”
