THE man known as Poole’s custom king is celebrating after his firm bagged a near-perfect score in a customer survey.

Andy Saunders is well known for his wacky car creations, but his day job is running Kampers and Kars at Ringwood Road, which deals in motorhome and camper sales and repairs.

Andy said: “I can’t believe it.

“We were asked to take part in this last year and we had to get customers to fill in forms and I had forgotten all about it.

“We’re quite small, so I wasn’t expecting anything from it. We’ve got a gold award, which is top honours. It says that we received no less than 80 per cent on any single category, but when I phoned up I found we received 97 per cent right across the board.”

Kampers and Kars was originally set up by Andy’s dad Ron in 1963 and the award came in the Practical Motorhome owner satisfaction awards.

Andy added: “I must admit, all I could think of was my dad up in heaven and him looking down on me and being very proud.”

Over the years Andy’s creations have included a car that was just 21 inches tall, a two-seater Mini and a Citroen 2CV inspired by Picasso. In 2012 he was asked by Top Gear and Nissan UK to build a road-going version of the Japanese manufacturer’s Deltawing racing car and last year he created a pedal-powered camper van that was just 6ft long and 5ft wide.
