THESE three eating places in Bournemouth have all failed on food hygiene after being visited by council inspectors.

  • Cafe Treviso in Wimborne Road
  • Tara’s in the Triangle
  • Westbourne Tandoori in Westbourne.

In every case the establishments failed all three categories – food hygiene safety procedures, structural requirements and the confidence in the management and managing of documents.

The inspections were carried out at various points in the past six months by inspectors at Bournemouth Borough Council.

Although the results are made public, the council is refusing to publish the full reports which would highlight exactly why these establishments completely failed their regular hygiene inspection.

Of 1,833 establishments published, only four failed their all their checks in the last six months.

The fourth – Pasa Turkish restaurant, in Charminster Road – failed in October but have since applied for a rescore and received a four star rating.

The three businesses which failed are Cafe Treviso in Wimborne Road, Tara’s in the Triangle and the Westbourne Tandoori in Westbourne.

Louise Jones, team manager for public safety at Bournemouth Council, said: “Each of these food premises will continue to be monitored by our environmental health officers following the zero rating given to them on the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme last year.

“A zero rating is an extremely poor rating for a food business to receive.

“We have revisited each of the businesses on more than one occasion since the initial inspection taking enforcement action to ensure compliance with food legislation.”

After the failing establishments were visited they were put in the category of Urgent Improvement Needed.

Bournemouth Borough Councillor David Smith, pictured, whose cabinet portfolio includes licensing said: “It is right that these people should be named and shamed.

“The public have a right to know which restaurants are failing to maintain acceptable standards with their kitchens.”

However, Oguz Hann, manager of Tara’s, a Turkish restaurant in the Triangle, said that the busisness had worked hard to improve its standards and has completed the council’s requirements.

He said: “There was a problem with the tap in the ladies’ toilet because it was broken but now we have fixed it and the other recommendations.

“The problem is the inspector came when it was busy and I didn’t have time to speak to them properly about what we were doing.”

The council has confirmed that the restaurant has now complied with the notices and the required improvements have been implemented but they have to wait three months from their December visit before being graded again.

Westbourne Tandoori restaurant and take-away has also made improvements since they failed inspections on November 6 and has requested a regrading.

Cafe Treviso in Wimborne Road has completed the improvement work and is being sold.

Westbourne Tandoori has since received the highest possible food hygiene rating after a follow-up inspection.

Why Bournemouth Borough Council won’t release the inspection reports:

Louise Jones, Team manager for public safety at Bournemouth Council, said: “The information which matters to residents has been made public and that is the food hygiene ratings given to establishments following an inspection from an environmental health officer.

“We want to reassure people that immediate action will be taken to remedy any poor conditions.

“Environmental health officers can serve enforcement notices, prosecute and close food establishments where conditions are found to be poor.

“It is worth remembering that these inspections capture a specific point in time and in many cases the businesses are supported and given advice on how to improve their ratings and their current situation could be very different from the time of the original inspection.”
