LEAGUE tables comparing secondary schools across Dorset and Hampshire have been released by the Department for Education.

Schools are compared by the percentage of pupils gaining the national benchmark standard of at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English and maths.

While grammar and independent schools across the area continue to top the tables, others are edging closer with vastly improved results.

In Bournemouth, Winton and Glenmoor Schools have continued their recent success with the both recording the highest figures for non-selective schools in the borough.

Ben Parnell, executive principal of both schools, said: “We are thrilled with our positions in this year’s tables.

“They are also evidence of the significant progress that has been made at both schools over the past few years.”

At Bournemouth School for Girls, 100 per cent of entrants gained at least the benchmark standard.

Headteacher Alistair Brien said: “We are delighted with the results achieved this year, all the more so since they are up on last year.

“The league tables are now far more detailed and I believe give a far clearer picture of how schools are doing by their pupils within their particular context.”

Talbot Heath also achieved 100 per cent to the delight of headteacher Angharad Holloway.

“We are delighted with the achievements of our GCSE and A level pupils,” she said.

She said 92 per cent of pupils attained high grades in English Baccalaureate subjects, and added: “We are one of the highest ranked schools nationally for our Value Added scores at GCSE.

“Our A level results were superb with over 20 per cent of all grades A* and 82 per cent A*-B.

“Once again, Talbot Heath is the top performing school for girls in Bournemouth and Poole based on A*-B grades at GCSE and A level.”

Highcliffe School achieved the highest results of any comprehensive in Dorset.

Headteacher Judith Potts said: “We are absolutely delighted with these results, they are a real credit to our students and staff.”

Poole High School achieved a nine per cent rise in students achieving grades from A* to C including English and maths.

Headteacher Fan Heafield said: “I think this shows that we provide an excellent quality of education across the curriculum.”

Bishop of Winchester Academy scored significantly above the national average with 63 per cent of grades from A*-C.

Principal Paul Mc Keown said: “There has been a massive improvement and this is a vindication of the hard work of our students and teachers.”
