POOLE Hospital’s home birth midwifery team are celebrating after helping deliver 100 babies in the nine months since starting.

Tiffany Wilson welcomed baby Maisie to the world on January 7 weighing 7lb 1oz, with the support of midwife, Jo Heath, who is one of the hospital’s Eden team, Tiffany’s sister, Kasha, and their mum, Tracy.

Formed in April 2013, the team are dedicated to helping women if they choose to have their child at home.

Tiffany said she knew she wanted to have her baby at home, with midwife Jo there to support her.

She added: “I had great support from all the midwives I met, who were lovely.

“It all happens from home, from the beginning, so it’s more natural and relaxing, and you can even have a few cups of tea in your own surroundings.”

The Eden team’s first arrival through a home birth was Grace Isabella Eden Witt, child to proud parents, Serena and James, who was named after the midwifery team.

Jo said: “Home births are natural, often with no painkillers or drugs. The most important thing is that it’s the mum’s choice, in their own environment, so they feel in control and supported.”

Dianne Smallworth, Eden team leader, says more women are choosing a home birth.

She said: “Women choose it for what they feel is the more relaxed and calming environment available at home with a reduced need for pain relief. We’re absolutely thrilled to be celebrating the 100th home birth for the team.”
