Speed skating 83-year-old takes to ice at Westover rink reunion

AN 83-YEAR-OLD speed skater was among those taking to the ice at a reunion.

Alan Turtle was asked to go to Norway to train for the 1948 Winter Olympics but said no as he did not want to lose his place on an apprenticeship.

He was among around 200 who skated again recently at the BIC as part of a reunion for those who used to enjoy Bournemouth’s Westover Ice Rink. The reunion led to renewed calls for a new ice rink to be provided in the town. Hundreds have signed a petition on the issue.

I'm Blind and have been for 8 years now and thanks to the help of my great friend David beach and the love and offers of support of other ex westover skaters i was able to skate the night of the reunion for the first time since losing my sight. If we were able to get another rink here in bournemouth then i too would be able to join the many others for the fun and enjoyment the skating brings to us. ice hockey games, ice shows etc. please support and sign our petition to get that new rink. thank you.
