POLICE were questioning drivers in Poole on Friday night exactly four weeks after the tragic death of a pensioner in a hit and run collision.

Disabled grandfather Christopher Colegate died in hospital after he was mowed down at the junction of Darby's Lane and Heath Avenue on Friday, December 13.

Rewards of £2,000 have been offered for information which leads officers to the driver, who left 69-year-old Mr Colegate lying in the road with fatal injuries.

Officers manned checkpoints on all four roads leading from the junction between 6.30pm and 8.15pm, asking every driver who passed if they had seen anything suspicious on the night of the crash.

Dorset Police Inspector Matt Butler said: "We hope to find someone who may have been travelling through the junction on the night in question who might be able to give us that vital piece of evidence to tell us exactly what happened."

He said it was quite an unusual operation, but they were hopeful that it would help to jog drivers' memories after the Christmas break.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to remind the public we need your help," he added.

"Someone out there knows what happened.

"Please call us, for the sake of Mr Colegate's family."

Friends of Mr Colegate came to watch the operation from the nearby Conservative Club, where he had been a regular.

Kevin Hannington, 52, said: "We are really pleased the police are doing this.

"We are really hoping they will get something, until then we just have to keep it in the public eye and hope it gives someone a twinge of conscience.

"It was probably an accident, but someone must know the driver.

"Chris was a lovely man who always did good deeds for people.

"Everybody makes mistakes, if this driver comes forward or someone who knows something the family may get some sort of closure."
