MEMBERS of a Poole youth marching band will be parading with an extra spring in their step after two landmark performances.

The Meridian Corps of Drums Youth Marching Band, formed three years ago, was one of only two UK marching bands to take part in London’s New Year’s Day Parade.

And during December the band was honoured to perform over the Thanksgiving weekend at Disney World, Florida, USA.

Bandmaster James Leonard, from Parkstone, told the Daily Echo: "It was massive for a little band like us to be chosen to perform in America like this.

“We’ve had a great year, the kids come to us from all backgrounds. They come with no musical experience so it was great for them to go all the way to America to represent the UK.”

The band got the chance to travel to Florida after auditioning then spending a year raising funds.

James said: “There was 71 of us in total, with 45 in the band performing. It was brilliant, especially following all the hard work that went into this throughout the year.”

The bandmaster also thanked parents and the local community for supporting their fundraising efforts throughout 2013.

“We were accepted at Disney World after sending in a DVD, but then they asked us to perform in the Magic Kingdom on one of their busiest weekends of the year,” said James.
