ONE of Bournemouth’s biggest primary schools has been rated as good following a two-day visit by government inspectors.

Hill View Primary was described as “improving” and changes made by new head Amanda Jones praised after Ofsted inspectors observed lessons on December 5 and 6.

The team of four inspectors also listened to pupils read, met governors, looked at documents and spoke to staff during their visit.

They concluded: “Pupils’ progress has improved significantly in the last two years. Achievement is good. Pupils are well cared for.”

They said the school’s reputation is good, and growing, but said more outstanding teaching is needed to make achievement in the school even better.

Hill View, in Ensbury Park, has 652 pupils between the ages of four and 11. The vast majority are of white British heritage and the number with special educational needs is above average.

Inspectors added: “Improvements since the headteacher’s appointment have successfully improved the quality of teaching and pupils’ attainment.

“She has managed the pace of change very effectively and created a harmonious community where morale is high.”

Chair of governors Steve Laird said he was “very happy” with the report, carried out under a new rigorous framework introduced by Ofsted in 2012.

He told parents: “The key recommendation of the report is for the school to raise the quality of teaching across the school so that all lessons are outstanding. This will then ensure that pupil progress is maximised.

“We are encouraged that the inspectors believe that the school does have the capacity to meet this challenge and move to the next level.”
