RURAL homeowners using oil-fired central heating are being urged to stay vigilant against oil thefts this winter.
Hampshire Constabulary have warned residents after a survey revealed that fuel is the third most likely commodity to be stolen by thieves targeting countryside homes.
With increasing oil prices likely in the coming months, Inspector Paul Pressley has said simple precautions can help to protect tanks.
He added: “The effect of this crime on victims is both costly and inconvenient, so it really is beneficial to be proactive and take measures to deter thieves from your property.”
Homeowners should consider doing the following to ward off thieves: n Fit a lockable cap or padlock to your tank.
- Install a motion detecting security light.
- Buy a fuel gauge alarm.
- Display a warning message to say that your tank is alarmed.
- Install a CCTV camera near your tank.
- Look out for suspicious vehicles, especially on the day of your oil delivery.
