SOMETHING’S brewing in Southbourne. For local resident Jennifer Tingay is launching her new company Southbourne Brewing Limited.

Jennifer was the Quality Manager at Ringwood Brewery for seven and a half years and is the brewer at Town Mill Brewery in Lyme Regis.

Now Jennifer, 37, is hoping that other companies might consider ‘investmenting’ in her business.

She says: “Southbourne is an excellent location for a new brewery, which in the long term I hope will provide a wide range of employment opportunities for the area’s school leavers, to promote the local economy and to add a new tourist destination to the town and, of course, brew quality ales.”

The first brew of Southbourne Ale is planned for New Year’s Eve with real time updates on Facebook. Brewing starts at 6am.

Jennifer is also holding ‘meet the brewer evenings’ at venues across Bournemouth.

  • Female brewers, or ‘brewsters’ as they are known, have made a comeback this year, according to the 2013 edition of the Good Beer Guide.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), which publishes the guide, says women now account for some 22 per cent of its 150,000-strong membership.

The group has added 20,000 female members in the past decade as Britain’s booming craft beer industry has encouraged more women to take an interest in new varieties and artisan brews.

Women aren’t just working in the industry either. The number of women trying real ale – traditionally characterised as an old man’s drink – has jumped to 34 per cent from 14 per cent in the past three years, according to CAMRA.

CAMRA said there has been a marked increase in ‘brewsters’ compared with five years ago when there were just a handful.
