Devoted son slams cleaning company who quoted partially sighted mother £19 – but charged £240

A DEVOTED son has called a cleaning company ‘heartless’ after they charged his 93-year-old partially-sighted mother £240 to clean her carpets after quoting just £19.

Doris Eacups was taken to the cleaners after being cold called by Bournemouth-based CleanXtreme and then told to pay 12 times the original price for the cleaning her carpets.

Her son Roy said: “I think people who could mislead a vulnerable little old lady who lives on her own are absolute poison. It was absolutely unbelievable and completely heartless.

“It would be very obvious that she can’t see properly as she is completely blind in one eye and her sight is severely diminished in her other eye.

“They didn’t even clean the carpets properly as the furniture was not moved out of the way.”

Doris lives on her own in sheltered housing in Springbourne but she has regular visits from her son, carer and neighbours.

She said: “It sounded like such a good deal when they called me up over the telephone. But when he finished the job he asked for me to pay £240 rather than £19 as he had done a deep clean.”

After receiving the complaint from Roy and his mother, CleanXtreme has now paid £240 back to Doris.

A spokesman for the company said: “At CleanXtreme we treat all customers fairly and all measurements add up to the right amount. All of our technicians have vigorous training before they start the job.”

Andy Sherriff, principal trading standards officer, said: “We are aware that CleanXtreme and other similar companies in the area have caused consumer concern across the South of England. “We would advise any consumers to exercise extreme caution before accepting a deal which sounds too good to be true.

“In particular remember that signing an extra contract may commit you to something you regret. If in doubt, just say no.

“Our advice for residents is to get in touch with the council with any information they have to enable us to take further action.”
