A SECTION of Ringwood Road that was closed due to a falling tree has reopened.

Dorset Police were called out by Dorset County Council to close the road at the Bear Cross roundabout and at Longham.

The road was initially closed just before 10am.

The problem trees were 150 to 200 yards from the Bear Cross roundabout, in the direction of Longham.

A Bournemouth council spokesman said one tree was down and another tree needed to be work on as it was falling down.

The road had to be closed as the trees were across both sides.

Councillor David Smith, cabinet member for planning and environment at Bournemouth council, said: “After last night’s stormy weather, we received a report this morning of a fallen tree having become snagged within another tree on Ringwood Road.

"Whenever we are alerted to the possibility of trees becoming dangerous, our council workers act immediately to assess the situation on site and then make a judgment based on that.

"On this occasion the trees were deemed to be a severe hazard with the potential to fall into the highway below.

"Working closely and quickly with Police and other agencies we closed the road access in order to remove the trees and make the environment safe.

"Electricity power was also temporarily turned off during this time as a power supply ran through the trees, being restored when safe to do so.”
