A KIND-hearted schoolboy and his little sister have raised hundreds of pounds for charity with a huge cake sale.

With the help of mum Kelly Howe, Daniel and Stephanie took to the kitchen after learning about the devastating typhoon that struck the Philippines last month.

Together, the three baked and iced more than 850 cakes, which sold out in around 10 minutes during a sale at Verwood First School.

Daniel, 10, became aware of the disaster while watching the news.

Kelly said: “It was Daniel’s idea, and Stephanie got on board with it straight away and wanted to help.

“He watches the news every morning while he eats his breakfast, and saw what had happened. At school, he is friends with a boy from the Philippines, and he learnt all about what had happened there from his teachers. He was really moved by it, and came home to say we needed to do something to help.”

The Emmanuel Middle School pupil decided a cake sale was the best way to raise money for the cause.

Kelly said: “It took two days to make that many.

“It was absolutely constant. While they were at school, I carried on baking, and as soon as they were home they’d help with the icing. I can’t count the number of eggs we used, but I think it was around 24 boxes. It actually ended up overheating the oven, and we had to call it a day at 850. We’d hoped to go to 1,000.”

The effort put in by the family resulted in £458.50 raised to help those who lost everything in Super Typhoon Haiyan. But they’re not done yet.

Kelly said: “We’d like to do it again at Daniel’s school, but we’ve been told that we’d need around 2,000 to make that happen because it’s so much bigger than Stephanie’s school.

“But we want to do everything that we can to raise money and help. I’m so proud of both of them for the hard work they’ve put in.”
