“JOHNNY ONIONS” will be trading his mild, pink-tinged Roscoff onions in Poole High Street this Christmas.

Jean-Claude Caroff is one of the few French onion sellers left and has been busy stringing his onions, shallots and garlic at his store behind the High Street.

Brittany onion sellers were once a frequent sight on English streets and the Frenchman, who settled down in Poole more than 30 years-ago, followed in the footsteps of his father Paul.

“The onions keep me young and healthy,” said Jean-Claude, 67. “Eat them raw, like apples, with cheese.”

Based in England since 1977, he believes he is the only Johnny Onions left in the south of England.

He and his laden bicycle can be found from Monday. December 16 until Christmas outside the Julia's House shop in the High Street from 7am to 10.30am and 1pm to 4.30pm.

On Christmas Eve he will be outside The Globe from 8am to 4.30pm.
