PLANNING chiefs have rubber-stamped proposals for a care home on Poole’s North Road, despite some opposition from neighbours.

Developers applied to Borough of Poole for permission to construct a home with 62 rooms for elderly residents, plus an additional 46 units to be used as sheltered accommodation.

This application, to redevelop land and demolish existing buildings at Park Place, was effectively agreed by the planning board on Thursday.

Board members delegated their approval to the council’s head of planning and regeneration services until Monday, which for legal reasons linked to the notification period, is the earliest a decision can be made.

Dave Caswell, aged 71, of North Road, spoke against the development on behalf of some neighbours at the planning meeting.

He said neighbours were not against constructing a care home at the site, but they feared the extra traffic and size of the proposed building was a problem.

Neighbours also voiced their concern about the loss of a popular green space, when the site is eventually redeveloped.

After the decision, Mr Caswell told the Daily Echo: “We all felt it was a done deal, but we had to stick up for our principals. We are dismayed it has been rubber-stamped.

“We are most concerned. We think it is going to be a disaster but there is nothing more we can do now.”

Before the planning board meeting Mr Caswell said: “Residents are objecting to the loss of this great green space that has been used by them for years – people have lunch there and walk their dogs.”
