HOLLYWOOD star Jack Black sampled “the best fish and chips in the world” on a tour of Bournemouth last weekend.

The celebrity, famous both for his films and musical career, visited Game in Boscombe before heading to Chez Fred in Westbourne for dinner yesterday.

He trekked for more than an hour to the eatery after a recommendation from the assistant manager at Game, only to discover that it was closed.

However, fortunately for Black, a member of staff setting up for his shift noticed him waiting outside – and he was the first customer of the day.

The actor then returned to Boscombe for sold-out performance at the O2 Academy with band Tenacious D.

Black, who has taken leading roles in blockbusters including School of Rock, King Kong and Gulliver’s Travels, was so taken with his meal that he recommended it to the crowds at the venue.

Allan Jones, who saw the gig and reviewed it for the Daily Echo, said: “He was waiting for his guitar to be tuned up, and he decided to tell us the story of his trek to Chez Fred, which took him an hour and four minutes.

“When he finally arrived, it was closed as it doesn’t open until 4pm, and he got there at 3pm. But luckily an employee noticed him and set the fryers going for him. His exact words were that the food ‘blew his mind’, and he said it was the best fish and chips in the world.”

Before his visit to Westbourne, the star bought an Xbox 360 at Game for his tour bus.

Assistant manager Mandy Phillips said: “He came in at about lunchtime.

“He was just on his own – he didn’t have any minders or anything like that with him. He was completely normal and really, really nice.”

She added: “He said, ‘Apparently, you guys have really good fish and chips’, and I told him he should go to Chez Fred. He looked it up on his phone and there’s one in Austin, Texas, so I had to spell it for him and tell him how to get there.”
