TEMPORARY banning orders have been issued to two AFC Bournemouth fans following an incident at the Cherries’ last match against Brighton.

Details of the incident have not been released but it is believed to have related to homophobic chanting or abuse.

Dorset Police said they reviewed the evidence and deemed it not substantial enough for further police action but it was serious enough for the football club to temporarily ban the two offenders.

AFC Bournemouth has confirmed that, in total, three individuals are currently going through the club’s disciplinary procedure following complaints from supporters made in the past month.

If the allegations are proven then these fans are likely to receive a long-term ban from attending games at the Goldsands Stadium.

However, some supporters have questioned whether the club and police are doing enough to stamp out problems. Cherries fan Robin Latchem, who sits in the North Stand, said he was disturbed by the homophobic abuse he heard at the match with Brighton.

He said he asked a steward why nothing was being done and said he was told the strategy was to monitor problems and take action later.

“While I am pleased efforts were being taken to tackle such abuse, it is odd that this particular strategy is being carried out since, by definition, none of us knew the authorities were interested and the message for 90 minutes was that it was being tolerated,” he said.

Dorset Police said they could not disclose details of police operations but dealt with all football-related disorder and antisocial behaviour “robustly”.

And AFC Bourne-mouth said: “The club is delighted by supporters’ ongoing willingness to help bring offenders to its attention by reporting any incidences of discrimination or antisocial behaviour.

“For AFC Bournemouth to collate evidence swiftly and efficiently, the club encourages supporters to report any incidents on the match day itself.”
