A NEW wave of improvements to Boscombe Crescent will start in the new year, almost a year later than originally planned.

The work will include new pathways and new seating bays, a separate route through from Walpole Road to Christchurch Road, a new planting bed, additional railings, creating a space for pop-up kiosks, the provision of a permanent Christmas tree socket and repairs to the front wall.

The first phase of the scheme took place in 2012 and the second phase was intended to get underway this spring.

But Cllr Jane Kelly, pictured, cabinet member for partnerships and regeneration, said the delay was due to the need to ensure they were getting the best value for money.

“Phase two of the improvements works to Boscombe Crescent will begin in January 2014 as part of the council’s ongoing work to regenerate Boscombe.

“This work has been put on hold until then to ensure that the most cost effective measures are used to undertake the works.

“This final stage of work will continue to set a tone of high quality as this important outdoor space in Boscombe is enhanced. We want to bring the Crescent back into use and create an area the public can be proud of.”

But Peter Trim, owner of Flicks video store in Christchurch Road, said: “What concerns me is that this really is another example of them saying one thing and not doing it.

“If they’ve not got the money to do something as simple and straightforward as doing some work on Boscombe Crescent then they have not got their priorities right.

“There is all this talk about regenerating Boscombe but nothing ever happens.”
