MORE than 90 firefighters battled a major thatched roof fire in the New Forest.

Fire crews have now left the scene of the major house fire in Brockenhurst.

The thatched roof of the property in the New Forest has been completely removed while some possessions, including a charred mattress and bed are scattered across the garden.

Bournemouth Echo:

The alarm was raised at 7.10pm last night and fire crews from 12 fire stations along with support crews were called to the scene in the New Forest.

The blaze happened at a home in North Weirs in the village of Brockenhurst.The response escalated to seven pumps, the mutli-role vehicle and a water carriers for additional water supplies.

Then a further five appliances due to the serious nature of this incident.

A spokesman for the fire service said at the scene: "Crews worked hard over night to get the possessions out of the property and save what was saveable.

"The first floor and roof are unfortunately completely damaged by fire.

"All the occupants are safe."

Bournemouth Echo:

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "We looked out of the window and saw lots of smoke but not any flames. We only live over the back.

"It's unexpected."

Allan Hendry, who lives in the same road, said: "It's tragic and no one deserves to have that happen to them. We saw smoke everywhere but didn't see the flames.

"It's not expected but you do worry with thatched roofs.
"There were a huge number of firefighters down here."

Another neighbour said: "It's absolutely horrendous. It makes you think if it'll take months or years to repair the house, if it can be repaired."

Crews from Brockenhurst, Lyndhurst,Lymington, Beaulieu, New Milton, Fordingbridge, Ringwood, Fawley, St. Mary's, Redbridge, Burley, Totton plus further supporting crews attended.

In total more than 90 firefighters were at the scene and four officers also in attendance.

Breathing apparatus, three main jets, three jets, and two hosereels were used.

All persons were accounted for and the fire and by 1.15am the operation was being downsized although six fire appliances remained at the scene over night.

The cause of the blaze is as yet not known.

'Further supporting crews' meaning there would have been relief crews from other stations to stand down brigades who have been there for a certain amount of time, who of which were obviously not yet called.
