A NEW zipline tower and surf wave planned for Bournemouth Pier will kickstart the council’s ambitious plans to regenerate the seafront, it is claimed.

The architects behind the scheme, whose design was praised by councillors, said the new sports attractions will be the catalyst Bournemouth needs to create a world-class seafront.

The first scheme presented by pier operators Openwide International was rejected by the planning board, who were concerned that the proposed high ropes course would have a detrimental effect on the historic pier.

But a second scheme, which removed the high ropes course and redesigned the zip wire, was described as “exciting” and “innovative” by members of the planning board.

It is now hoped the 20-metre tower, zip line and surf wave attraction will be in place for next summer. Openwide hopes the extra attraction will persuade more people to pay the council-imposed toll fee and visit the pier.

The improved plans were designed by Ryan Martin and Sean Daly of DMWA Chartered Architects in Wimborne. They said in a statement: “DMWA are extremely pleased to have gained an approval for such a prestigious and high profile project.

“All the team’s hard work and efforts paid off with the councillors praising the work presented – this rarely happens. We strongly believe, contrary to some views, that the new zipline tower and sports attractions on the pier will have a highly positive impact for the visitors, users and the town as a whole.

“We see this scheme as the catalyst and starting point for the forthcoming regeneration of the seafront and, as a local practice, are very proud to be involved.”

Cllr Dave Kelsey, chairman of planning, said: “We hope it will be a real asset to the seafront and give a boost to tourism.”
