WORK on the latest phase of a £100,000 shared footpath and cycleway has started at Sandford.

The section being worked on is between Sandford Middle School, at Woodlands Roundabout, and Miles Avenue.

It is part of a Dorset County Council project, continuing until mid January next year, which aims to provide safer routes for cyclists and walkers the length of the A351.

County council highways team management engineer Andrew Bradley said: “The works will be largely off road and the work will take place outside peak times with minimal traffic management.

“We are not expecting to work on the main carriageway or cause any major disruption and we will provide pedestrians with a safe passage through the construction.”

Civic officials hope the completed scheme will encourage more people to cycle to work and school, thereby reducing traffic congestion along the A351 and surrounding area.

A county council spokesman explained: “Previous phases of the project have provided links from Bakers Arms roundabout to the Holton Heath roundabout, Morden Road to Northmoor Way and around the Bakers Arms roundabout itself.
