Poole Tourism's welcome centre takes gold at Dorset awards
POOLE Tourism’s Welcome Centre has snatched gold at the first-ever tourism awards for Dorset.
The prestigious event took place at the Tank Museum, Bovington, following a rigorous three stage judging process.
Collecting the award, Becky Knight, Poole’s Welcome Centre manager, said: “We have a fantastic, friendly team who are passionate and have an extensive knowledge of the area.
“Visitors are extremely complimentary about our service and we go out of our way to make sure they go away with the best possible impression of Poole.
“We are very proud of this achievement.”
Overcoming stiff competition, Poole Tourism secured the top award for the Tourism Information Service of the Year, jointly with Lyme Regis, for its “Outstanding customer service, interesting website with easily accessible information and a superb facebook page of photos”.
Cllr Judy Butt, portfolio holder for tourism, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by Poole Tourism in an area that brings a whole range of benefits to the area.
“Investment by local businesses not only means great facilities and events for local people to enjoy, as one of the largest employment sectors in Poole, it also delivers jobs and develops pride in our town.
“It is great that the tourism office has been recognised for the excellent work that it does to promote the industry.”
Poole’s tourism businesses also proved to be a main feature of the awards with seven further winners across the 14 categories including: n South Lytchett Manor Camping and Caravan Park and Rockley Park achieving Silver and Bronze in Holiday Park of the Year category.
- Brownsea Island achieving Gold in Best Tourism Activity, Sport & Experience category.
- Rallye Sunseeker and The British Beach Polo Championships achieving Silver and Bronze respectively in Tourism Event of the Year category.
- Farmer Palmers achieving Bronze in Visitor Attraction of the Year category.
Geoff Curtis from Brownsea Island also won the outstanding customer service award.
