“Inspirational” mum Linda Thornton shortlisted for Tesco Mum of the Year awards
A BEREAVED mum who will stop at nothing to help young people achieve their dreams has been nominated for a prestigious award.
Linda Thornton, whose son John was killed in southern Afghanistan in March 2008 while serving as a Royal Marine, has made the shortlist of the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards 2014.
The 57-year-old, together with husband Pete, created the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation in the wake of the 22-year-old’s death, and has helped hundreds of youngsters to go after their goals.
She regularly visits schools and organisations to spread the word about the charity.
Kaye Jackson, who nominated Linda, said: “Young people from around here have benefitted so much from Linda’s determination that they should achieve their dreams as John did in his short life.
“That dream could be going on a football referee course, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, attending youth camps or buying a musical instrument. I admire her so much because despite her desperate loss she inspires others. She wants youngsters to succeed, to reach out and grab life and all it has to offer and climb as high as they can dream. It is truly amazing that someone can spread so much good and help so many from a tragedy.”
Judging for the awards will take place throughout November, and all shortlisted mums will be considered by a panel which includes DJ Sara Cox, TV personality Gaby Logan and sports presenter Denise Lewis.
