Debra Stephenson attends launch of new project to help celebrate achievements of women
MORE than 70 ladies who lunch came together at a Celebrating Women Luncheon held at Poole’s Lewis-Manning Hospice.
The charity organised the special fundraising lunch to launch a new project aimed at helping women and girls build confidence in their abilities.
It was described as “a joyful uplifting occasion by women for women to celebrate their achievements”.
It took place in a specially dressed marquee in the grounds of the Lilliput hospice, decorated by the patient art group, and included an auction of handmade items including scarves, fabric pinboards, throws and cushions, all made by patients.
Among those marking their achievements were an inspir-ational speaker, a cancer patient and a star of the TV screen.
Special guest speakers included Amanda Waring, actress campaigner, film maker and inspirational speaker, and local TV actress and celebrity Debra Stephenson, star of Bad Girls, Coronation Street and The Impressions Show, who will be starring in panto at Lighthouse later this year.
Hospice chief executive officer Elizabeth Purcell introduced the event and former Daily Echo blogger and current patient Nikki Hastings spoke of her treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
“The project is by women for women and it aims, in some small way to empower women and girls to make positive, life enhancing choices, no matter what stage of life they have reached and whatever their circumstances,” said Rachel Lapworth, director of development at Lewis-Manning.
“We believe that women have unique gifts to offer the world and we want them to have the confidence to share those gifts,” she said.
