Mystery over air bomb at Poole shopping centre
12:00pm Tuesday 15th October 2013 in News
EXACTLY how the tail fin section of a 1,000lb air bomb became embedded in ground near Poole’s Wessex Retail Park is likely to remain a mystery.
Bomb disposal experts, who were called to the retail park on Saturday morning, were forced to place a 300-metre cordon around the fragment while it was checked out.
Had it been a complete bomb, officers may have had to clear a two-mile safety radius.
Dorset Police confirmed yesterday that the investigation into the incident was closed.
Rumours that the item may have been taken from a nearby scrap metal dealership were also quashed, as the dealership in question told the Daily Echo there would have been ‘no way’ they would have taken such an item in the first place.
A member of the public contacted police at 11.26am after spotting the ‘large item with four fins’ sticking out of the ground, close to a stream and a small wooded area.
Members of Tidworth Troop 721 EOD squadron of the Royal Logistic Corp worked to recover the tail fin.
