Ben's Memorial Drive raises charity funds in memory of Blandford teenager Ben Andrews

A CONVOY of 50 cars raised money in memory of a popular Dorset teenager.
Queues of cars descended upon Blandford School before driving around the town for what is to be an annual event, entitled Ben’s Memorial Drive 2013, in support of the Ben Andrews Foundation.
It was created in recognition of Ben Andrews, 19, who died on May 7, 2012 in a road traffic collision at the A354 Pimperne roundabout near Blandford.
The driver of the other car, soldier Benjamin James Southall, 20, was later given a 32-month prison sentence for causing Ben’s death by careless driving when under the influence of alcohol.
Ben’s dad, Paul, said: “A lot of his friends were there and brought along their cars to take part.”
He added: “It has meant a lot to us that Southern Subaru said that they wanted to put on the event, Dorset Police would support it, and so many people turned out on the day.”
Ben’s aunty Charlotte Attfield said: “As soon as Paul put out the message that we were going to do this again after last year, it was lovely how people got in touch and wanted to get involved.
“I think that Ben would have been overwhelmed by how many people were there.
“Since its launch, the foundation has raised over £5,000, made through various events held in Ben’s memory, which is great.
“Overall, the main amount of money has been given to the Firefighters Charity, because they obviously attended the accident Ben was involved in, but we have also given to the Blandford Counselling Service and Blandford Youth Club.
“The message we want to send out is for young people to ensure that they, and everyone else on the road, makes it home safely.”
