Celebrations for Olympic marathon runner Liz Yelling after birth of twin boys
FORMER Olympic marathon runner Liz Yelling has given birth to twin boys, just days after the town's inaugural marathon.
Her husband Martin Yelling who helped to organise the festival, said he'd been on tenterhooks all weekend.
“We didn't really plan it very well as Liz was due into Poole hospital to be induced on the Monday,” he said.
“Her labour was much like the way Liz runs her marathons. It was a long, drawn out process at the start with a sprint finish at the end!”
Paula Radcliffe, Liz's former training partner, was one of the first to congratulate the couple who live in Poole with their four-year-old daughter Ruby.
The first twin was born at 12.29 on Wednesday weighing 6Ibs 7oz followed by his brother at 12.59 weighing in at 7Ibs 1oz.
“Liz's mum had twins which weighed 8Ibs 8oz and 8Ibs 9oz so we were a little nervous which is why Liz wasn't allowed to go the full term and was induced at 38 weeks,” Martin explained.
“All three are doing really well. We are still discussing names and have got some ideas, but we will definitely make a decision by the weekend.”
Martin says he is also relieved to have a better gender balance in his life: “I have always been surrounded by girls,” he explained.”Liz has twin sisters, I have two sisters, our first born was a girl so when the first boy popped out I was a gibbering wreck. But when the second boy popped out I could hardly believe my eyes. I thought, this is a numbers game and now I'm up at last!”
