NESTLED in the Dorset countryside lies one of the county’s smallest primary schools.

With just over 100 pupils, St James’ in Gaunts Common is a far cry from some of the over-crowded and ever-expanding primary schools in surrounding towns.

Despite its homely atmosphere and spacious grounds, the school is not over-subscribed with many parents unaware of its existence.

Headteacher Jacqui Booth hopes parents and other interested parties will visit the school for its open afternoon on Tuesday next week to see it for themselves.

The school, situated in a rural area four miles outside of Wimborne, looks old-fashioned and quaint.

But appearances can be deceptive and pupils inside are using high-tech equipment as part of their learning.

All pupils have access to laptops and lessons now involve computer programming.

The school has just four classes with overlapping year groups which assure youngsters are confident and learning well before they move on to the next class.

Pupils are drawn from a large, sparsely-populated catchment area and transport can be provided if necessary.

Jacqui Booth has been headteacher for five years and is proud of the school and its pupils.

She said: “We want people to know that there is an amazing little school in the middle of nowhere. People don’t even know we are here but we are not difficult to get to.”

The school has many links with the local community and local churches. Parents are also heavily involved in the running of the school and help with after school clubs and classroom-based activities.

One of the most stunning features of the school is its grounds, complete with top-notch play facilities.
