Cherries legend Steve Fletcher helps woman injured in crash on A35
CHERRIES legend Steve Fletcher got out of his car to help a young woman lying unconscious in the road after a crash.
The former AFC Bournemouth Striker was on his way home from a scouting mission for the football club when he spotted a car on its roof and a woman lying in the road at Slepe on the A35.
Fortunately an ambulance transporting a patient between hospitals was also passing so a paramedic was able to tend to the woman while “Fletch” checked her car for other people “I just thought I've got to get out to try and help,” he said.
“I could see there was a car overturned and she had managed to crawl out but then she was unconscious to start with.
“I had to go and get a blanket from the man in the ambulance - I said to the bloke 'can I have your blanket there's a girl lying in the road'.
“You think the worst but thankfully she was alright.”
Steve was asked by the paramedic to check for any other injured people.
He said: “The ambulance lady said 'can you check the car to see if there's any other passengers'.
“That was obviously an eerie thing as the car was on its roof and crushed to bits.
“It was not an easy thing to do but you just do it.
“Three or four of us got out to help and I just did what I could,” he added.
The woman crashed at 10.15pm and is understood to have escaped serious injury.
And Steve said he would like to see changes to the A35 between Bere Regis and the Bakers Arms roundabout.
He said: “I've drived down there many times and I hate it.
“One of my daughters will be driving next year and I the first thing you think is it could be your daughter and I thought 'I don't want her driving down this stretch of road'.”
