Poole’s Lighthouse bidding for 'Most Welcoming Theatre' in national awards
4:00pm Friday 27th September 2013 in News
POOLE’S Lighthouse Arts Centre is bidding to be crowned the ‘Most Welcoming Theatre’ at this year’s UK Theatre Awards.
Theatre insiders are hoping supporters will back them online before the September 30 voting deadline expires.
Chief executive Elspeth McBain said: “Our audiences are among the most diverse and discerning in the country.
“We take their support for granted at our peril and work tirelessly to bring extraordinary performances to their attention.
“We hope our audiences like what we do and by voting us as the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre they can demonstrate to the world that not only do they value Lighthouse, but that our theatre in our town and region matters.”
Public voting for the award, in association with Classic FM, continues all month, with the winner to be announced at a plush ceremony in London’s historic Guildhall on October 20.
The votes will be weighted by theatre capacity, with the winner decided by dividing the number of public votes by the number of seats at each venue.
The awards are the only nationwide awards to honour creative excellence and outstanding achievement on and off stage throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Elspeth said: “We are proud to be a leading cultural venue in the south west with an international reputation for receiving and more recently producing a programme of world class artists alongside local performing artists.
“We provide a supportive environment for performers to present their work on a professional stage and at all times we have at the heart of the organisation the audience for who the work was created.”
