Tesco to start work on Kinson store “within weeks”
TESCO could be set to begin work in Kinson within weeks.
There are now just three shops, plus the Co-op, left in the arcade in Wimborne Road and those remaining have been told they have to leave on November 1, the Daily Echo understands.
It is thought that roadworks associated with the new store will then begin and the Co-op will close at the start of January before the existing precinct is demolished to make way for the new store.
Tesco signed the final legal agreements for the development a year ago, but is unable to start work until the arcade is empty.
Ricky Barton, who runs Meridian Furnishers in the precinct, said: “I’ve been told that there’s going to be no lease extension.
“When I came in here I knew it was only for 18 months or two years. I live locally and as far as I can see it’s only going to be a good thing, but there are people opposed to it.”
He said he was looking at a unit in the Sovereign Centre in Boscombe but also hoped to keep a presence in Kinson.
Many in the area are hoping that it will have a positive effect on the number of people coming to Kinson to shop.
Ramesh Lal, pictured inset, who is chairman of the Kinson Business Forum, formed a few months ago with the aim of uniting traders in a bid to revitalise the area, said: “KBF welcomes the imminent arrival of Tesco, as this will remove the uncertainty and move forward the long-awaited revival of the precinct. In addition this brings genuine new jobs into the area, which can only be a good thing.
“It’s hoped this will also extend interest from other retailers and businesses to look at Kinson with a view to considering opening in the area and benefit from the increased footfall.”
A Tesco spokesman said: “We’re continuing to work with current leaseholders. We will keep the community updated on timescales for the store opening and look forward to investing in the local community.”
