IT WAS Roald Dahl himself who said: “A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest men.”

And the great author would have enjoyed the tomfoolery on display at Stourfield Junior School as pupils and staff alike dressed up as some of his best-loved characters.

The fun was in aid of a good cause – as well as celebrating national Roald Dahl Day, the school’s new library and music room were officially opened by MP Tobias Ellwood.

Assistant head John Taylor said: “It’s a double whammy for us. As well as it being Roald Dahl Day, we had the chance to open our new music room and library, so there was a lot for us to celebrate. We encouraged children to dress up and lots of staff members did as well.”

Mr Taylor, who attended as the Fantastic Mr Fox, said there were plenty of eye-catching costumes on display.

“We had lots of characters from The Witches, and there were quite a few dressed as Mr and Mrs Twit with big straggly beards We also had some Willy Wonkas and BFGs wandering around too.”

Pupils may need some time adjusting to their new facilities, as the music room is where the library once stood and vice versa.

“We just moved it around,” said Mr Taylor.

“They’re in much better and more suitable places now. The library looks really fantastic. The room was completely refurbished over the summer, and the walls have been designed with a special material that not only looks attractive, but also soundproofs the space.”

The school invested £25,000 in the library, with around £10,000 spent on books.

Mr Taylor said: “Students have been very enthusiastic about the changes. The library looks much more mature than many other primary school libraries now – it’s more of a grown-up space, and the children are enjoying it.”
