Staff at U-Drive car hire firm say ‘awful smell’ from nearby recycling centre is making them unwell
STAFF at a Parley car hire firm are struggling to work due to the smell from a recycling centre next door.
Mechanics at U-Drive’s depot in Enterprise Way, by Bournemouth Airport, have complained about feeling nauseous and suffering from headaches due to the unbearable pong from neighbouring Eco Sustainable Solutions.
The Environment Agency said the recycling firm, which processes food waste, garden waste and soil at its Parley site, was “intermittently” found to be in breach of its environmental permit due to the “odour issue”.
U-Drive HR manager Alison Hayes said: “Mechanics are generally quite tough but recently they have come and said they just can’t stand the smell any more.
“It has been a problem since I started here about four years ago but has got a lot worse over the last few months, and staff are complaining to me about having headaches.
“It is also very embarrassing when we have customers in asking what the ‘awful smell’ is.
“We understand the need for recycling centres but why should they disturb the running of our business and affect the health of our staff?”
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said they had received complaints about the smell on 59 days so far this year, on 41 days in 2012, and on 26 days in 2011.
“Not all of these reports were substantiated as there can be a different source of the odour or our officers may not have been able to detect the odour when responding to the report,” he said.
“We consider a range of enforcement options and decide on the most appropriate action to take.”
Eco Sustainable Solutions managing director Trelawney Dampney said they were aware of the problem.
“I think they have got a valid point and we acknowledge the problem,” he said.
“The smell has got much worse recently.
“We are preparing an emergency planning application, which will go in next week, to cover the whole site.
“We believe this is the only way we can guarantee stopping these odours escaping, and we will be doing the work the week we get permission.”
