A FUGITIVE has this morning pleaded guilty to killing Bournemouth father Clive Wilcox 12 years ago.

Daniel Scott, 33, admitted the manslaughter of the dad-of-two after more than a decade on the run abroad.

He was only caught in June this year when he tried to get back into the country using a fake passport.

Clive, 42, died after being punched once during an altercation with Scott and a group of youths outside the One Stop shop in Winton on Friday May 4, 2001.

The tragedy unfolded when Clive and his wife Angie called into the store on Moordown Road, which is now a Tesco Express, to buy cigarettes on their way home from an evening out with two other friends.

As they left the shop they were confronted by the gang.

Following an exchange of words, Clive was punched by Scott and fell to the ground.

He suffered a serious head injury and was taken to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s intensive care unit. Clive, who worked as a lift engineer at the time, never regained consciousness and died the following day.

Scott, formerly of Bournemouth, appeared at Winchester Crown Court this morning and pleaded guilty to Clive’s manslaughter.

He also admitted one count of possessing a fake passport at St Pancras International Station on June 13 this year.

Kerry Maylin, prosecuting, said the incident involved a single punch and witnesses gave different accounts of what happened that night.

Judge Guy Boney QC remanded Scott in custody and said he will return to court on Friday October 4 for sentence.

Speaking afterwards: Detective Inspector Stewart Balmer, of Dorset Police's Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “This conviction follows an extensive and lengthy investigation and I am pleased that the man responsible for Clive Wilcox’s death has now been brought to justice.

“This was a tragic incident that resulted in an innocent man losing his life and I hope that this conviction – some twelve years after Clive’s death – will bring some closure to Mr Wilcox’s family.

“I also hope that this conviction sends out a clear message that Dorset Police are committed to bringing offenders to justice.”
