ONE of the highlights of the rural social calendar kicks-off tomorrow as the New Forest show welcomes thousands of people and special VIP guests.

This year’s countryside extravaganza in Brockenhurst will be given a royal seal of approval when the Earl and Countess of Wessex pay a visit on Wednesday, July 31.

New Park has been transformed into a village of marquees and 600 stalls where you can purchase anything from original paintings, jewellery and clothing to local wines, farmhouse cheeses and chutneys.

The theme for this year’s show is ‘Get Involved’ and there is a huge variety of activities on offer from Tuesday, July 30 until August 1 so visitors of all ages can become part of life in the forest.

Show president Mike Richards said: “There is just so much here to see and do, you’d need a full week just to walk around the site and take everything in.”

Children can cuddle a chick or rabbit with Longdown Activity Farm, cheer on their favourite in the ferret racing or be kept entertained for hours in the Discovery Zone.

Show chairman Geoff Morgan said: “The show is all about having fun, but also educating youngsters about life in the countryside.”

Batsmen and bowlers will be able to step up to the crease in the new state-of-the-art cricket training zone and show jumping classes are on offer throughout the three days.

The flower show boasts beautifully landscaped gardens, sweet pea classes and flower arranging competitions as well as the Southern Vegetable Championships.

Two of Britain’s most distinguished poultry judges will weigh up a record-breaking flock of 300 entries, more than double last year’s 130 exhibits.

Prepare for jaw-dropping entertainment from The Devil’s Horsemen, the Pony Club Mounted Games and the stunning Heavy Horse Musical Drive.
